Report – Taipa 14 February 2010

Four New Zealand and North Island CTRA (Circle Track Racing Association) Championships were run on Taipa Speedway’s newly refurbished track in conjunction with their domestic race meet on Sunday 14 February 2010.

This was the first race meet on the reshaped and re-laid track after major earthworks by the team led by Pip Jecentho.  From the start, to the finish of the three rounds, the track surface held up extremely well.  Both spectators and competitors were waiting for the new high clay bank to claim its first victim.

The racing started with Limited Saloons competing for the CTRA North Island title.  Keith Wilson from Kaikohe led Anita Sloot (Whangarei), Nick Calwell (Kaikohe), Dan Oliver (Whangarei), Gary Ross (Kaikohe), and Mike Marshall (Kaikohe), through all three rounds to earn the title.  Wilson’s superb driving on the new track was a pleasure to watch.  Anita Sloot was placed second overall.

Mens C Grade turned into the Honda battle with new driver Craig Aspin driving a third DeWaal Honda.  Both Daniel and Craig DeWaal were watching Aspin’s rear bumper by the third race, and Aspin was rewarded for a great drive with the traditional bucket of water in the pits.

The second CTRA North Island title to be run was Standard Production Saloons.  Grant Kidd, Jaythan Swift, and Ray Dare, all from Taipa, battled with Rex Roycroft, Bruce Mallindine, and Shirley Andresen from Kaikohe.  Roycroft was the points leader going into the third round, and even though Mallindine came away with the win, Roycroft’s second place was enough to earn him the title by one point over Mallindine.

Taipa’s President, Brian O’Connell,  showed his new B Grade Corvette for the first time out against Kelvin Coate.  They both had a win before parking them in centre field during the third race.  Super saloon, Bryan Armstrong, was joined by Keith Wilson’s Limited in this third race, but Armstrong raced hard for the win.

The Super Production Saloon CTRA Championship saw an all Kaikohe field of Boss Harris, George Price, and Debbie Taylor in single turbo Super Production Saloons, joined by Max Andresen and Bruce Mallindine in non-turbo Standard Production Saloons.  As predicted Boss Harris’s Subaru led the field in the first round.  Then Mallindine, in his notably quick Skyline, led them across the line for both the second and third rounds to earn him the title by two points.

Didi Roycroft and Rhonda Teixeira had their Standard Production Saloons out for three rounds with Carole Teixeira, Marilyn Field, and Chris Weal in C Grade cars.  Roycroft had three wins and Marilyn Field came away with two.

The inevitable happened in Standard Stockcars as they raced for the CTRA New Zealand title.  Battling with Ryan Carey and pushed wide, Daniel Field in his stockcar (28) climbed up the new clay wall, teetered sideways, looked like he was going to topple over onto his lid, but slid down and stopped still parked on the wall.  The result was front end steering damage that retired him for the rest of the day.  It was an all Taipa field of Marty Lorenz, Taka Albert, Ryan Carey, Merie Perry, Leona Cameron, and Rob Teixeira that continued to battle for the title.

Taka Albert had a second and a third, and then took out the last race to gain him most points over Rob Teixeira, second.

The race meet concluded with the usual, Shell Taipa sponsored, ‘all-in’.  Bruce Mallindine and Grant Kidd led the race but couldn’t lap Craig DeWaal’s C Grade Honda, and the race was awarded to DeWaal.

Taipa’s next scheduled Race Meet will be held on Sunday 28 February with racing starting at 1pm.  Come along and see who will be the ‘wall’s’ next victim.
